A process for preparing an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene by the polymerization of ethylene using a catalyst comprising a solid catalyst component and an organometallic compound, characterized in that said solid catalyst component is a product obtained by contacting the following A and B together: A the reaction product of a magnesium dihalide and a titanium compound represented by the general formula Ti(OR)4 wherein R is a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms;, B the reaction product of an aluminum trihalide and a silicon compound represented by the general formula Si(OR')4 wherein R' is a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
