20- W.E. 53,993, ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A slag detector apparatus is capable of detecting a condition of 5% or less slag entrainment in a molten metal stream so that actions can then be taken to shut off further discharge of the molten metal from the ladle to the tundish in a continuous casting line. The molten metal stream has a fluctuating crosssectional dimension and is composed of a continuous succession of recurring cyclical globules of molten metal. The slag detector apparatus employs a coil having an axial length at least equal to the length of each globule of molten metal in the stream therof.
