The administration of Factor I and/or Factor H to a mamal has been found to alleviate or prevent such autoimmune diseases as systemic lupus erythematosus rheumatoid arthritis and glomerulonephritis. The active ingredients may be administered as a pharmaceutical composition in admixture with suitable carriers diluents or adjuvants, such as saline, phosphate-buffered saline or Ringer's solution. They arepreferably administered in unit dosage form.
