A light color aliphatic hydrocarbon petroleum resin including a piperylene component and a chain transfer agent component useful as a tackifying agent, especially with copolymers. The resin of the invention has a softening point of about 0-40°C a number average, molecular weight of from 100 to about 900 a low Gardner color of, about 3 or less and is formed by the aluminum chloride catalyzed polymerization of a feed stream essentially free of butadiene.
