A radar system for headway control of a vehicle comprises, an FM-CW radar for producing signals respectively representing the range and closing rate between the vehicle and an object. Signals are produced representing certain vehicle conditions including the speed, steering, acceleration and declaration of the vehicle. All of said signals are summed into a single signal representing the actual hazard level between the vehicle and the object. A reference signal is then produced representing a predetermined reference hazard level derived from summing weighted values of the range closing rate and vehicle conditions.
