A gas discharge lamp has a discharge gas sealed within a cylindrical-shaped tube through which light is transmitted. Internal and external electrodes are provided, as first and second receiving ends respectively, on the side of the same end of the tube with the internal electrode located within the tube and provided along the axial direction of tube outside of the tube except for a location where a slit is provided. A high frequency power source is connected to the internal and external electrodes and upon the application of a high frequency power to the internal and external electrodes a discharge occurs within the tube.
