A seat (2) is mounted pivotably about a first axle (A1) on the stand (1) of the chair. The seat frame (8) is connected to a second axle (A2) which is fastened to the backrest (3) behind the backrest (3) at a horizontal distance from the latter and at a vertical distance from the first axle (A1). The backrest (3) produced from an elastically resilient material, when deflected out of its vertical position, causes the second axle (A2) to move over an arc of a circle of radius A1 - A2; the rear seat portion adjacent to the backrest (3) is also lowered correspondingly thereby.
