A hydrophilic copolymer suitable for the manufacture of contact lenses and other medical applications. This copolymer is prepared by copolymerization of 70 - 99.5 wt.% of diethylene glycol monomethacrylate with 0.5 to 30 wt.% of vinyl monomers selected from the group consisting of esters and amides of methacrylic acid and acrylic acid, in the presence of at least one radical initiator and of 0.01 - 2 wt.% of a crosslinking agent containing at least two olefinic double bonds in its molecule.
