Homopolymers of benzocyclobutenes of the formula , R1 being H or CH3 and R2 being , where n is 0 to 6 and, copolymers of such benzocyclobutenes with (a) C2-C8-.alpha.-monoolefins (b) monoalkenylarenes which are random copolymers and (c) monoalkenylarenes which are block copolymers n being zero and the, conjugated diene polymer block optionally being hydrogenated and processes for the preparation of such polymers by (co)polymerization of the appropriate monomers in the presence of a catalyst. 4-(3-Butenyl)benzocyclobutene is a novel compound.
