Highly effective calcium channel blockers having potent antihypertensive and coronary vasodilating actions ?.?. 4,7-, dihydrothieno2,3-bpyridine derivatives of the formula: wherein R1 is straight or branched chain C1-C4 alkyl alkoxy-, alkyl, or arylalkyl; R2 is hydrogen straight or branched, chain C1-C4 alkyl or alkoxycarbonyl; R3 is hydrogen, straight or branched chain C1-C4 alkyl, phenyl which may be substituted by one or more halogens or alkoxy groups optionally substi-, tuted cycloalkyl, or optionally substituted cycloalkylalkyl; or R2 and R3 taken together may form an alkylene.
