Propanol derivatives of the formula I I, wherein X is a leaving group;, R1 is H or a protecting group; and R2 is H, and R3 is a group -CH2Y wherein Y is a leaving group; or, R2 and R3 together form =CH2. The propanol derivatives of the formula I are useful as mutifunctional alkylating agents.
