A hand-held vacuum cleaner having a housing a handle depending from the, housing, a fan contained by the housing a nozzle and rotating brush contained, by the nozzle; said housing further including a shield circumferentially spaced about said fan and substantially circumferentially surrounding said fan, whereby the shield blocks items impinging against the housing from the fan from damaging the housing.
