The invention is a welding machine for making rings by micro plasma torch welding of opposed clamped ends of a forming blank and a method for making such rings. An automatic sequence of operations enabling a very short cycle of operation is provided. Beginning with strip stock an end portion of the, strip is clamped and a ring is formed while the strip remains clamped. The end portions of the formed blank are gripped and bent into a substantially circular configuration with the ends, of the blank presented in opposed relationship.
