A data storage device for use with a portable label printer is comprised of a battery-operated hand-held unit having a memory for storing therein the data that is to be imprinted on labels. Only function keys are provided, the data entry keys being deliberately omitted to simplify the device. The function keys enable an operator to selectively access and retrieve the stored data and to output that data to a portable label printer.
