An improved method of treating streams having mercaptan or mercaptan-based compounds therein particularly adapted for the processes of sweetening sour hydrocarbons and regenerating spent caustic solutions is provided. Specifically, the present invention provides an improved method of treating a first stream having mercaptan or mercaptan-based compounds are either extracted, catalytically oxidized to disulfide compounds, or both, wherein said first stream is either a sour hydrocarbon distillate or a spent caustic solution; provided if said first stream is a sour hydrocarbon distillate said second stream is a caustic solution, and if said first stream is a spent caustic solution said second …
