An antimicrobial composition containing, as combined active ingredients an, isothiazolone compound complex of the general formu?a (MXb).........(I), wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted monovalent hydrocarbyl group R2 and R2 are, each independently a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom M is, a metal or ammonium cation, X is a complex-forming anion a, is 1 or 2 and b is an integer which is such that the anion X satisfies the valence of the cation M and 3,3,4,4-, tetrachlorotetrahydrothiophene 1,1-dioxide effectively inhibits the growth of microbes in, for example industrial, water systems for pulp and paper.
