An ammonia synthesis reactor which mainly consists of a pressure vessel housing at least two heat exchangers seriesconnected and installed concentrically in catalyst beds is described. A simple construction permitting an optimum cooling of the vessel wall with the aid of loop gas (cold non-reacted gas), an optimization of the pre-heating of said gas and an improvement of the gas-stream pattern within the vessel is provided in a, reactor which preferably is equipped with more than two catalyst beds. This is achieved by providing at least two separately, controllable sources of loop gas in order to optimize heat transfer in the heat exchangers.
