A process for the manufacture of iodine in the presence, of a catalyst selected from copper gold, a transistion metal or, a compound thereof characterized in that the aqueous solution of an alkali metal iodide is oxidized - with oxygen air or other, oxygen containing gas - in the presence of carbon dioxide (an al= kali metal carbonate and/or bicarbonate being thus formed).
