Separation of lignin and phenol from phenol solutions which are obtained from phenol digestion of lignocellulosecontaining materials, The organic phase containing lignin and phenol is extracted with water or an aqueous solution at elevated temperature, whereby a phenol-containing aqueous phase and a lignin-containing organic phase are obtained. The temperature of the aqueous phase is lowered whereby a low water-content phenol phase and a low lignin-content aqueous phase are obtained, the latter returned at elevated temperature to the extraction that is being carried out.
