ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A stereoselective process for the, preparation of antihypercholesterolemic agents of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor type comprises treatment of an intermediate .beta.-hydroxyketone with a trialkylborane and sodium borohydride at low temperatures.
