5-Amino-3-oxo-4-(3-substituted-phenyl)-2,3dihydrothiophene and derivatives thereof of the formula I (I), wherein n is 0, 1 or 2, R is, for example lower alkyl or, cycloalkyl having 3 to 7 carbon atoms R1 is hydrogen or alkyl, having 1 to 4 carbon atoms R2 is, for example, hydrogen or alkyl, having 1 to 4 carbon atoms X is hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower, alkoxy halo or trifluoromethyl and Y is, for example lower alkyl, or lower alkoxy. The compounds exhibit herbicidal activity and at low dosages also plant-growth regulating activity.
