A water ring vacuum pump having a body (10) end members (11, 12) on the body and an impeller (20). An impeller shaft (21) extends through the end members and is journalled for rotation therein. An inlet (33) is formed in one end member and an outlet (33) in the other end member. A port plate (30) is located adjacent each end member and the blades of the impeller so that a manifold (32) is formed between each port plate and its adjacent end member. Each port plate (30) is moveable relative to its adjacent end member (11, 12) by screws or the like (40) passing through the end members.
