In this process a liquid oil having an iodine value of from about 95 to about 145 is hydrogenated in the presence of a partially deactivated nickel catalyst having a concentration of nickel of from about 0.01% to about 0.2% by weight of the oil. The hydrogenation process is carried out at a temperature which is gradually increased from a starting temperature of from about 160°C (320°F) to about 200°C (392°F) to a final temperature of from about 210°C (410°F) to about 250°C (482°F) and a pressure of from about 0 psig to about 100 psig.
