N-(Mono- or disubstituted methyl)-2-azetidinones, produced by cyclizing .beta.-hydroxy or .beta.-halo substituted acid sec-amides in which the amide nitrogen is substituted with a mono- or di-substituted methyl group having activating substituents are useful, intermediates for the production of antibiotics.
