A method of hydrogen treatment of coal tar or coal tar pitch having high asphaltene content and a high aromaticity characterized in that the hydrogen treatment is carried out at a hydrogen pressure of from 3.92 to 17.64 MPa (40-180 kg/m2G), a temperature of from 300 to 420°C and a liquid hourly space velocity of from 0.2 to 2 hr-1 using a catalyst comprising a first catalytic component containing Mo and a second catalytic component containing Ni and/or Co carried on a substrate. The respective metal oxide contents of the first and second catalytic components in the catalyst being from 10 to 30 weight percent and from 1 to 6 weight percent.
