Abstract of the Disclosure An apparatus and method for cleaning rotating regenerative heat exchangers for transferring heat from a high temperature contaminated flow of gas to a lower temperature clean flow of gas. Mounted upon a carriage which is adapted to be moved radially over an end surface of a storage substance are nozzles directed onto the end surface to spray a cleaning and/or flushing medium onto the storage substance. The rotor of the regenerative heat exchanger is associated with a drive which makes it possible to control drive r.p.m. and cleaning r.p.m. the latter being reduced in relation to the former.
