Abstract From the Canadian patent

The service durability of the hearth bottom of DC arc furnaces in which steel rods embedded in the bottom act as the anode is to be improved. To accomplish this, the bottom has at least in the area of the steel rods (9) an upper fire-side layer (12) formed from chromic-oxide-containing magnesia and a lower, organically bound graphite layer (14) as well as an intermediate, layer (13) consisting of a mixture of the two materials.
