Abstract From the Canadian patent

Explosion welding is used for splicing thick pipes for the transport of oil and gas. A plating ring and its explosive are located inside the pipes and a support surrounding the two pipes in order to limit the deformation occurring in the pipes during the actual welding process. Since the pipes are deformed, the support will also be deformed. To enable repeated use of the support, the section thereof which is subjected to said deformation is replaced by a resilient material.
