Electronic instrumentation is provided for detecting the radon contamination of air in a dwelling to determine safeness for human occupancy. Thus, alarms may be sounded if there are contaminants unsafe for human occupancy such as the presence of radon gas. Air passed through two flow paths is analyzed respectively by separate detectors and the signals compared. Air flowing in one path is safe for human consumption. In a portable instrument for use in-situ filtered air is used in one channel.
