Abstract, Optical pulses of nominal frequency fo and of predetermined repetition rate t?1 can be generated by means of the induced modulational instability in single mode optical fiber, provided the fiber has anomalous dispersion at fo. The method involves coupling (15 15') first (13) and second (14) cw or quasi cw optical radiation, of frequencies f1 and f2, respectively into, the optical fiber (17). The resultant radiation in the fiber has frequency fo between f1 and f2 and is, sinusoidally modulated with frequency ?f1-f2?. Propagation of the resultant radiation through the fiber results in steepening and narrowing of the amplitude peaks. The length of the fiber typically is chosen such …

Why it's free to use
- Granted April 25, 1989. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended April 25, 2006.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
