Abstract, A welding position detecting apparatus is provided on a welding torch that forms an arc between a welding wire and a groove face on a workpiece. The apparatus has an optical system for irradiating the groove face with a converging ray at a point in advance of the point of the arc, so as to form a groove-face-crossing image. An observing optical system introduces this groove-facecrossing image and an arc image into its field of view whereby these images are detected at the same time. The arrangement affords a simplification and size reduction relative to prior art systems.

Why it's free to use
- Granted March 7, 1989. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended March 7, 2006.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
