Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method and apparatus for detecting wear of a rotatable bit used to drill a wellbore is disclosed. In drilling operations a drilling fluid is pumped down through a drill stem and is discharged through ports in the drill bit and into the annulus between the drill stem and the wellbore. Excessive wear of the bit at a selected location is detected by a sensor which is linked to a restrictive device capable of reducing the flow of drilling fluid through at least one port. To detect excessive wear of the bit, at least one abradable sensor is located in the bit at a selected location.
