A process for the preparation of acetic acid and/or methyl acetate by reaction of methanol with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a palladium compound which is soluble in the reaction mixture and a compound RZ wherein R re-, presents hydrogen or an alkyl cycloalkyl or aralkyl group, and Z is, chlorine bromine or iodine, characterized in that in addition there are present in the catalyst system an ionic bromine or iodine compound other than HBr or HI and a sulphone or sulphoxide.
