A beta-pinene monomer is sequentially contacted with a catalytic amount of a halide-free organoaluminum compound in an inert solvent, which catalyst is hydrolyzed and activated by the addition of water, and subsequently adding an alkyl halide and recovering the resin. The hydrolyzed and activated organoaluminum compound is of the formula AlR3, wherein in R is hydrogen oxyhydrocarbon or hydrocarbon radicals or mixtures thereof. A catalytic amount of the organoaluminum compound is formed in an inert solvent by the addition of about 0.5 mole to about 1.0 mole of water per mole of the organoaluminum compound in the solvent.
