A wide band local communications system handling both circuit switched and packet switched communications has a number of units accessing a common unidirectional transmission line, which may be folded, on which circuit switched and packet switched communications are organized into hybrid frames comprising a region for each communication type. Each unit is in communication with a number of communication stations or a control centre which carries out centralized functions.
