A method of manufacturing a patterned coloured surface, on an object having a surface of relatively low surface absorption when compared to the interior of the object and the article, produced by the method. The method comprises the steps of first preparing the pattern on the surface of the object by contouring predetermined portions of the surface, so that recesses are created therein having a substantially greater surface absorption and subsequently applying to the entire surface including the recesses a paint containing dye pigment, solvent and about 0.5-8%, calculated on the entire quantity of the paint of inert, non-, soluble fine-grained particles having a maximum cross dimension …
