The device comprises a core containing nutrient and/or therapeutic material and/or other biologically active material and an insoluble rigid brittle skin enclosing the core. The skin is formed of a synthetic resin, and is arranged to require support of the core to maintain its integrity. The skin may be formed on the core by dipping the core in the liquified resin or by spraying liguified resin on the core.
