A method of drying grain is disclosed together with a grain drier system that includes a section in which ambient air is heated by an open flame and passed through the grain to accomplish drying and a section in which cool air is subsequently passed through the heated grain to cool it. The method comprises collecting the cooling air after it has passed through the heated grain and become heated, passing the ambient air in a stream through the flame and introducing the collected, heated cooling air in a stream which is disposed on the periphery of the stream ambient air as it flows past the flame, thereby minimizing contact of the heated cooling air with the flame.
