Novel methods and systems are provided herein for sealing the surface controls of an oil and/or gas well. The method includes the steps of directly forcing a hydrogel into the surface controls of an oil and/or gas well by applying a hydraulic force of up to 6,000 psi or more directly against the hydrogel. The hydrogel is then frozen therein in situ thereby forming, a hydrate plug to prevent the egress of oil and/or gas. The creation of such hydrate enables removal of the surface controls pipeline sections, etc. with, great safety.
