Apparatus for feeding charge to a covered electric smelting furnace is disclosed. The apparatus is substantially gas-tight and includes a charging chute which is connected to a housing so as to feed charge into an opening on one side of the housing. The housing includes a discharge opening in the bottom thereof in communication with the interior of the furnace. The housing has a cylindrical lower portion which receives a rotatable hollow cylinder in a nesting fashion. The cylinder has an opening for receiving charge from the chute and is rotatable so as to bring that opening into alignment with the discharge opening in the bottom of the housing so as to discharge charge into the furnace. …
