A method for forming a dome-type structure comprising the steps of inflating a support envelope and applying a hardenable foam material to the exterior surface of the support envelope. The foam is permitted to harden around the envelope and the hardened foam material is coated with a perlite-based composition. The perlite composition is permitted to harden so as to form a dome. The support envelope is removed from within the hardened foam. A dome-type structure comprising a hardened foam layer coated with a perlite-based copmposition is also disclosed.
