Abstract From the Canadian patent

The invention is concerned with a process for the preparation of a 5-hydroxymethylimidazole of the formula 1 1, where R1 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms phenyl, benzyl or .beta.-phenylethyl, and R2 is alkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms or phenyl, wherein an imdazole of the formula 2 2, where R1 and R2 have the meanings given for formula 1 is reacted, with formaldehyde or an oligomer of formaldehyde is aqueous hydrochloric acid solution, containing from 5 to 18% by weight of hydrogen chloride, at from 80° to 160°C if appropriate in a, closed system under pressure the resulting 5hydroxymethylimida-, zole is isolated in the form of its hydrochloride and the ratio of imidazole to …
