Abstract From the Canadian patent

A breakerless distributor for an internal combustion engine ignition system in which a number of light emitting diodes (LEDs) equal to the number of engine cylinders are connected in series for simultaneous energization by the timing pulses. A phototransistor arranged in spaced con-, fronting relationship to each LED is connected to a silicon controlled rectifier which triggers the energizing circuit for an individual spark plug each time the phototransistor is turned on by emissions from its associated LED. The LEDs and phototransistors are arranged in concentric circles on a printed circuit board with the angular distance between pairs of LEDs and phototransistors equal to the firing …

Why it's free to use

  • Granted November 17, 1981. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended November 17, 1998.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
