A method and apparatus for the removal of pollutants from flue gas includes a first adsorber spaced apart from a second adsorber and a flue gas cooling unit located intermediate the two adsorbers. Flue gas is passed through the first adsorber at a preferred temperature range for the efficient adsorption of sulfur trioxide is cooled by the, cooling unit, and is passed through the second adsorber unit at a preferred temperature range for the efficient adsorption of sulfur dioxide and the oxides of nitrogen.
