Pure 2-acyloxyalkane sulfonates-1 of the formula I (I), in which R1 represents a straight-chained or branched alkyl radical containing 6 to 16 carbon atoms, R2 represents a straightchained or branched alkyl radical containing 1 to 17 carbon atoms or phenyl, and M represents a monovalent metal ion pre-, ferably an alkali metal ion, are prepared by reacting a 2-hydroxyalkane sulfonate-1 of the formula II R1 - CH(OH)CH2SO3M (II), with an activated acid derivative of the formula III R2 - COX (III), in which R1, R2 and M have the meanings given above and X re-, presents an acyloxy group containing 2 to 18 carbon atoms or a halogen atom.
