Novel benzimidazole-2 derivatives of the formula (I), wherein R1 denotes alkyl containing 1 to 7 carbon atoms R2 denotes hydrogen or, alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms R3 denotes hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R denotes carboxy alkoxycarbonyl, wherein alkoxy contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms, with the proviso that R1 differs from methyl or R3 differs from 6-methyl, when R is carboxyl or hydroxymethyl and R2 is hydrogen and pharmaceutically usable salts of compounds of the formula I with salt-forming properties are disclosed as medicaments.
