The useful shelf life of living erythrocytes suitable for transfusion is extended by maintaining adequate ATP and 2,3 DPG levels using a water insoluble polymer containing releaseable phosphate ions as a source of inorganic phosphate ions during the storage period for supplying physiologically acceptable, continuous sustained release of metabolizable phosphate to such erythrocyte. This maintains the ATP and the 2,3 levels at least equal to those of freshly drawn blood for a storage period equivalent to 28 days of storage at 4°C.

Why it's free to use
- Granted September 1, 1981. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended September 1, 1998.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
