In a modem for use with optical fibre transmission systems, three bit words of a binary signal to be transmitted are converted into pairs of waveforms selected from three different waveforms so as to provide PAM-PPM modulation of the carrier; demodulation is achieved by multiplying the received signal by a sawtooth waveform at the repetition frequency of the transmitted waveforms, and integrating and sampling the multiplied signal to identify the transmitted waveforms. The system reduces the continuous content of the transmitted signal and facilitates synchronisation.

Why it's free to use
- Granted August 25, 1981. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended August 25, 1998.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
