The equalization coefficients of a frequency domain equalizer, which may be used at the receiving terminal of a communication system to compensate for transmission distortion are automatically and reiteratively adjusted in response to successive overlapping sample sets of a received time domain signal to cause the gradient of the mean square error of the received signal to converge toward a predetermined value such, as zero.
