Excess coating material is removed from a coated web by an air doctor and is entrained in an exciting gas mixture flow. It is directed along a plate to effect primary coating material separation and recovery in a chamber. Thereafter the flow passes along an inwardly spiraling apparatus wall which terminates in an air exhaust duct. The wall initially continues the prolongation or extension plane of the plate and includes secondary recovery chamber whereby separation is implemented by both centrifugal and gravitational forces.
